AFTA-1 & KenBts. - “Radical Center” (Video)

For those who may not be up, AFTA is a unique, L.A.-based talent with an impeccable aesthetic to all that he does, including his work as a member of the Pronounced Love (▲❍▼❏) collective.
Ken, on the other hand, is best known as the man behind the boards of most of your favorite SA-RA productions; as well as a silent partner of sorts in the ever elusive Blu – NoYork! album, but he is also a fully capable producer in his own right, to say the least - as he’s proven time & time again, the most recent highlight being his work on Bilal‘s instant classic, “Levels.”

...and his resume only continues to expand, w/ his latest endeavor, the multi-media being that is t h e . b r e a t h “Radical Center” is one of their first collaborations, an almost 8 minute instrumental movement that was first heard on the AFTA-1 x ▲❍▼❏ Love Is Real Vol. 5 compilation, which could only be properly introduced by a statement from the artists themselves…

Flying Lotus / Stones Throw Podcast 66 - Lovers Melt

A few years ago, a certain Stephen Ellison made an internship at the Stones Throw office. No one would then come up with the idea that this guy would revolutionize the instrumental Hip Hop. But that's exactly what happened. Under the pseudonym Flying Lotus he pays a tribute not only to Madlib and the late J Dilla Hip Hop visionary, but created an original mix of rock-hard beats and pure electronic madness.
The latest Stones Throw podcast is exactly from that Flying Lotus and is one of the most interesting give-aways of the very generous label. On "Lovers Melt" is a huge amount of rare and unknown treasures - we as listeners get the full dose of funk, bossa and brass grooves, coupled with ingenious soul samples and wild percussion. Or, as summed up his colleagues from Stones Throw so wonderful: "No theme, no loops, just records found in the valley."

Samiyam - "Cushion"

SAMIYAM
“SAM BAKER’S ALBUM”
(Brainfeeder)

Release Date: June 28, 2011

Blazing back onto the radar with one of the most anticipated and long-awaited albums yet on Brainfeeder is SAMIYAM. Sam Baker's Album is 40 minutes of deviant listening pleasure, a series of woozy, off-center hip hop instrumentals drawing heavily on Baker's love of electronic funk but never obligated to it. Intensely detailed and carrying considerable emotional weight, this is not Rap Beats Vol. 2, but rather an album of fully realized tracks that stand on their own, knee-deep in the groove and bent to the side. Sludgy, chunky beats mesh with organic sounds and fractured stops and starts, all coming together like the pieces of a demented dream.
SAMIYAM moved to Los Angeles from Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2006; in his short time on the West Coast he has become one of the city's most progressive and recognized producers, a man who has helped spearhead the revival of interest in instrumental hip-hop music. His album Rap Beats Vol. 1 was the first release on the Brainfeeder label, and SAMIYAM’s raw hip hop sound with a psychedelic edge and off-kilter beats could be called quintessential Brainfeeder style.

Released 13 April 2011
"First of all we would like to thank all the producers and beatmakers around the globe who took part in this beautiful experience. We received an unbelievable amount of fresh beats and had a real hard time to choose who gets to shine. No violence was used creating the tracklist although it was kind of close at one stage. Everything you hear is previously unreleased material. So turn up the volume and enjoy the ride."

"If you appreciate what you`re hearing, you might want to consider donating a few bucks via bandcamp (for free download put in 0). Make shure you visit the artist`s bandcamp-sites or websites and show your support."

Small Black - "Photojournalist" & "Gothamist House" (Video)

Small Black is an indie band from Brooklyn, New York. Their sound is commonly described as belonging to the chillwave genre, though they band's members don't label themselves as such. They have already released an album under Jagjaguwar. They are signed on both the Jagjaguwar and Lovepump United Records labels.

Small Black are pretty big. They're kind of like a step down from Washed Out and Toro y Moi in terms of band popularity. So anyways, they're from Brooklyn and they're certainly one of the bands that we will remember from the chill wave era.

Toro y Moi: Interview at RnR Hotel (Video) / "New Beat" / "Still Sound" (Voodoo Bear Remix)

Toro y Moi is the stage name used by recording artist Chazwick Bundick. His music has taken on many forms since he began recording, but he is now identified with the chillwave movement of summer 2009. The stage name, "Toro y Moi," can be roughly translated to "Bull and Me."

Bundick was born on 7 November 1986, in Columbia, South Carolina, and attended Ridgeview High School where he formed well-known Columbia indie rock band The Heist and the Accomplice with three schoolmates. He is of Filipino descent from his mother and African-American descent from his father.

Bundick graduated from the University of South Carolina in spring of 2009 with a bachelor's degree in graphic design. Late in his school career, Bundick formed a close musical relationship with fellow chillwave luminary Ernest Greene who plays under the name Washed Out. He has since been signed to Carpark Records, on which he released his first full-length album "Causers of This" in January 2010.

Toro Y Moi (a.k.a. Columbia, South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick) is the sound the world has been waiting for. This multi-cultural juggernaut gathers up the best musical elements from around the globe— R&B, Indie Rock, Electronic Dance and Psychedelica —and creates something-freaking-else! Over the course of his first groundbreaking full length “Causers Of This”, Toro Y Moi turns the aforementioned musics upside-down with his breathtakingly innovative approach. The incendiary power of Toro Y Moi’s funky synth and guitar play, pumping digital rhythms and gorgeously bright vocal harmonies makes for a formidable combination. A soon to be masterpiece of a currently unnamed genre.

His second album, '"Underneath the Pine", was released on February 22, 2011.

Think Loud:" At last: We are proud to present our first release to be distributed worldwide. Droppin' Mirrors is a musical cross-section of past collaborations, as well as a glimpse of projects to come. But what makes this compilation special? The tracks featured are no mere licensed releases, nor are they a "Best Of" of ThinkLoud's back catalogue. Droppin' Mirrors contains almost nothing but exclusive productions. These are the natural result of joint shows with, and tours managed by ThinkLoud's DJ Conikt across Germany and Europe. We managed to get artists like Aloe Blacc (Stones Throw), Kev Brown (Up Above), Grand Agent (Superrappin') and Oddisee (Diamond District) on board. At the same time, young and talented artists like Portformat, Shuanise, Fid Mella, and others have found their way onto the album. They embody the very sound we are aiming for. A major portion of the songs were composed by in-house producer Stroe, and recorded together with the guest artists in Berlin.
The result is a genre-crossing product that transcends its roots in Rap, Experimental, and neo-Soul. Droppin' Mirrors sets sail towards electronically fragmented, soulful beats, deconstructivist arrangements, and unconventional ideas to let a charm of its own flourish."

Everything is a Remix Part 1-4 from Kirby Ferguson

Part 1: Remixing is a folk art but the techniques are the same ones used at any level of creation: copy, transform, and combine. You could even say that everything is a remix.

Everything is a Remix Part 1 from Kirby Ferguson on Vimeo.

Part 2: An exploration of the remix techniques involved in producing films. Part Two of a four-part series.

Everything is a Remix Part 2 from Kirby Ferguson on Vimeo.

Part 3: Creativity isn't magic. Part three of this four-part series explores how innovations truly happen.

Part 4: Our system of law doesn't acknowledge the derivative nature of creativity. Instead, ideas are regarded as property, as unique and original lots with distinct boundaries. But ideas aren't so tidy. They're layered, they’re interwoven, they're tangled. And when the system conflicts with the reality... the system starts to fail.
